Responsibilities
Performs specialized and technical cytology examinations according to established procedures including accurately screening GYN and non-GYN cytology samples. May assist with fine needle aspirations
Under general supervision, examines microscopically and interprets gynecologic and non-gynecologic slides for infectious, reactive/reparative and abnormal cells. Refers appropriate cases for hierarchical review. Processes and prepares specimens for examination, labels slides/specimens, records classifications on slides and alerts pathologists to abnormal cell structures for further examination
Executes a variety of laboratory tests and analyses to confirm findings
Accurately enters data and results within the laboratory information system. Maintains quality assurance records
Serves as a technical resource person and troubleshoots problems in the daily operation of equipment and specimen evaluation
Operates, calibrates, prepares and maintains equipment
Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipates needed supplies; places and expedites orders for supplies; verifies receipt of supplies
Prepares reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information
Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies
Maintains safe and clean working environment and protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control, hazardous waste and other policies and protocols
Performs other related duties as required and directed
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree
Certified as a cytotechnologist or certified within 18 months of hire or transfer
